1.ESD Application Solution for Single-Port USB 2.0

The operating voltage of a USB interface is typically 5V. While slight voltage fluctuations may occur, they generally do not exceed a range of ±0.2V, maintaining a level between 4.8V and 5.2V.

For the ESD protection solution of a single USB 2.0 interface on a surveillance camera, JY Electronics has selected the TT0521SB to provide ESD protection for the two data signal lines (D+ and D-), and the TS0511LE to provide ESD protection for the VBUS line.

The TT0521SB from JY Electronics is a bidirectional, single-channel ESD chip in a DFN1006-2L package. It complies with the IEC 61000-4-2 (ESD) standards of ±25kV (Air) and ±20kV (Contact). It has a working voltage of 5V, a leakage current of 0.01µA, and a junction capacitance of 0.35pF.

The TS0511LE is a unidirectional, single-channel ESD chip in an SOD323 package. It complies with the IEC 61000-4-2 (ESD) standards of ±30kV (Air) and ±30kV (Contact). It has a working voltage of 5V, a leakage current of 0.1µA, and a junction capacitance of 150pF.

As shown in Figure 1, since USB 2.0 supports a transmission rate of up to 480 Mbps, devices with a junction capacitance as low as 0.35pF are selected for the ESD protection of the data signal lines D+ and D-. In contrast, VBUS is simply a power line providing 5V and 500mA, so there is no high requirement for device capacitance; selecting the unidirectional protection device TS0511LE is sufficient to meet the requirements.

2. ESD Application Solution for Dual-Port USB 2.0

In certain application scenarios, a single USB port cannot meet usage requirements, necessitating the configuration of two or even more USB interfaces. However, due to limited space, it is impossible to use an excessive number of ESD protection chips. Therefore, for the dual-port USB 2.0 interface, we employ the integrated TT0514TL for ESD protection.

TT0514TL is a unidirectional, four-channel ESD protection chip in an SOT23-6L package. It has a working voltage of 5V, a leakage current of 0.1µA, and a junction capacitance of 0.6pF. The application method is shown in Figure 2.

3. ESD Application Solution for USB 3.X (Gen1, Gen2)

Against the backdrop of artificial intelligence and advanced algorithms, future surveillance cameras will require higher data rates and higher power transmission levels. Consequently, more advanced USB interfaces may be adopted, and this solution also provides ESD application schemes for USB 3.X.

For the USB 3.X Gen1 interface, we adopt the combination of TT0314TP + TT0514TL.

For the USB 3.X Gen2 interface, we adopt the combination of TT3304SP + TT0514TL.

The TT0314TP has a junction capacitance of 0.6pF, while the TT3304SP has a junction capacitance of 0.3pF, satisfying the even higher speed requirements of USB 3.X Gen2. The structures of these two interfaces are identical, and their application methods are similar, as shown in Figure 3.*Figure 3: Circuit diagram for USB
